Staff Picks No. 150

Idiot Plot : Child of the Church (Lucia della Paolera & Gobby), Justine Lugli, Monica Mirabile, Jake Dester, Valerie Keane, Tommy Martinez, Esther Sibiude
Roulette Intermedium
Tuesday June 2nd 2026

Child of the Church presents site-specific musical performances that are one of a kind - a revolving orchestra aboard Jane’s Carousel, live study music at the New York Public Library, that kind of thing. One night only, with a free livestream! But, if you can, I recommend seeing the work in the flesh.

PITCH : Sol Cabrini, Angel Zinovieff, Nora Raine Thompson, Isabella Thorpe-Woods
SPR OMEN
Thursday May 28th 2026

With PITCH, SUPR OMEN has created an incubator for its inaugural curators-in-residence (Nora Raine Thompson, Isabella Thorpe-Woods) to platform and deepen their relationships with the early-career artists they’re excited about. SUPR OMEN notes that this program is founded on fostering emerging artists’ investment in each other “in a field that often promotes competition over community.” More of this!

This is the best idea I have heard in a long time.

Mountain of Woe, Professor A, Kwami Winfield, Munt Cascade, Mouths Agape
Fringe Records
Sunday May 31st 2026

I think there are few things more beautiful than a Sunday evening at Fringe Records, which is undoubtably one of this city’s greatest hubs for noise music. This lineup includes some of my number one noise insider’s (love you Shiloh) favourite artists, so I would be a fool to miss. Who wants to come violently vibrate for a few hours with me?

SHELL : Ana Evans, Linnea Scott, Lola Basiliere, Lee Lelis, Acadia Barrengos, Sam Theobald
SoHo Playhouse
May 29th-June 7th

Looking to fill the sexy hockey hole in your heart? This may be the show for you! This is a solo show, if you do not consider peanuts to be co-stars. So, if draggy, absurdish, clown-esque solo performance checks your boxes, SHELL is definitely for you.

SUB : Alex Aguirre, Mitchell Polonsky, Chloe Claudel, Addie Guidry, Santiago Mallan, Jonah O’Hara David, Nick Walther, Micah Godsey, Emily Lincoff, Olivia Vaughn Hern, Henry Mott
ERF
June 4th-7th 2026

Ok, so this play is on a submarine in 2085 and the list of characters are maybe not people I would actually want to be in a submarine with… but I DO want to watch whatever the hell they get up to in this wild new show by Alex Aguirre. If you like to be taken for a psychedelic ride and love unpredictable theater, you should probably come to SUB.

The Gym at Judson
June 5th-14th 2026

I’ve heard excited whispers about this work from those in the know, from the seminal geniuses over at Pink Fang, at one of my favorite venues in NYC, the Gym at Judson. Both lead artists are brilliant in their own right, and a match made in heaven. The design team is crazy genius pants stuff. I think this will be special. I say that a lot, but I really mean it.

Staffer: Reuven Glezer

Ooooh so glad this one has a 1pm matinee on a Friday! I have been looking forward to this for a while, as all of the involved artists are incredible and I missed the last Pink Fang show.

SORE : Ashley Pierre-Louis, Dominica Greene, Sarai Frazier, Lucca Del Carlo, Tushrik Fredericks, Nadir Bey, TRIBE
The Flea
June 4th-6th 2026

I loveeeeee Dominica Greene and am thrilled by the prospect of discovering the work of one of her primary collaborators, Ashley Pierre-Louis, with whom Greene developed this dance piece on Black feminine eroticism, pleasure, and love. I’m also delighted by the fact that this piece has a credited sound collager (Tushrik Fredericks).

Performance Mix Festival June 5th Program B : James Barrett, Stacy Grossfield, Christopher “Unpezverde” Núñez
Abrons Arts Center
June 4th-7th 2026

Whenever Stacy Grossfield does anything, I turn into Paul Revere, except the streets of colonial America are Staff Picks, and instead of announcing that the British are coming, I’m announcing that Stacy Grossfield is doing a thing. So I’m here to announce to Stacy Grossfield is doing a thing. A win for the culture! Grossfield shares a night with James Barrett and Christopher “Unpezverde” Núñez, two artists I look forward to familiarizing myself with, as part of New Dance Alliance’s 40th (!) annual Performance Mix Festival.
