Staff Picks No. 172

Daily Diversions : Cherrie Yu
Abrons Arts Center
November 12th-14th, 2026

A new work constructed around table tennis, with a “multigenerational group of dancers” taking over Abrons’ Playhouse Theater. Athletics as dance? Yes, totally!

Staffer: Reuven Glezer

I’ve Been Waiting for This Moment for the Rest of My Life : DonChristian Jones, Morgan Bassichis
Danspace Project
November 19th-21st, 2026

This sounds like the kind of multidisciplinary/multi-interested work that entices the most curious of performance lovers. With dramaturgy from Morgan Bassichis? Yes fucking please!!!

Staffer: Reuven Glezer

Deaf Republic : Dead Centre (Bush Moukarzel, Ben Kidd, Tilly Taylor), Zoë McWhinney
NYU Skirball

November 12th-15th, 2026

One weekend only - NYU Skirball imports one of Ireland’s finest experimental troupes with their newest, an adaptation of Ilya Khaminsky’s really astounding verse-narrative of the same name. It looks hyper-theatrical, political, lush…I am literally booked this entire weekend and cannot make it, GO IN MY PLACE!

Jeanie : Isabell Renner, Carsen Joenk, Ugly Face Theatre
The Owl, 497 Rogers Ave Brooklyn, NY

Hilarious one women show about a young woman so disillusioned with life, she packs her uncle chicken and decides she is going to scam the worst of the worst.

RSVP for Address
Saturday November 7th, 2026

The lovely community hub DEVISE/EXPERIMENT hosts a house party (gasp!) where live performance and DJ sets go hand-in-hand. Sounds promising to me!

why would you hurt me on a dying planet? : Kat Sotelo, Hillary Gao
Ars Nova
Friday November 6th, 2026

Kat Sotelo is an artist who flirts with the sublime. A siren in ten-inch pleasers who prances through the glitteriest depths of our collective imagination, Sotelo dreams big: motorcycle rides, Rapunzelesque hairpieces, the tallest cakesit in recorded history. When working with Hillary Gao, the glitched-out, fuzzily nostalgic digital portion of her practice comes especially to life, as witnessed at box machine just last week. These two know just how to make you ache— but god, it feels good.

Staffer: Leah Plante-Wiener

Another collaboration to get excited about! Kat Sotelo is gleefully dangerous and Hillary Gao is poetically complex. What will they do together?! I suppose one most journey out to Ars Nova and find out!

the [home] project : Ethan Eva Karas
box machine
Sunday November 8th, 2026, 2026

I am so glad that another opportunity to catch the [home] project has presented itself, since I missed it during Prelude. I rsvp'd within about 30 seconds of receiving an email from box machine - WHEW.

Staffer: Blake Bolan

CRETINS : George Corrin, L Stevens, Aaron Berlau, Dot Davis, Bri Joy, Susannah Yezzi, Jerilyn Armstrong, Madison Fargo, Noah Stevens
Cloud City
Saturday November 7th, 2026

A reading of a new play by George Corrin, which also happens to be a great case of a blurb that I have nothing to add to: “Pink Flamingos meets Deathrace 2000. The Cretins are a killer queer biker gang competing to commit the most heinous hit-and-runs. […] CRETINS pulls from exploitation films, the Theater of the Ridiculous, Vaginal Davis’s ‘terrorist drag,’ and the works of John Waters to create something truly sickening. As such it is filled with extreme violence and sexuality that is at times sexy, upsetting, political, disgusting, immoral, or fun.”

IMPRESSIVE, SINCERELY : Robert Norman, Alex Hare, Annika Burley, Joshua William Gelb, Amara James Aja, Liz Leimkuhler, Sophie Sorensen, Sara Robillard, Ugly & Arrogant Productions
P&T Knitwear Bookstore
November 9th-December 6th, 2026

This play about a failed American author who goes to a small German town where her book is incredibly popular … and then things go awry … is in a bookstore! It seems like all the pieces have come together to make this a not-to-be-missed show in the final whispers of 2026.
