Staff Picks No. 111
OUT OF THE MANHOLE : Das Besties (Travis Amiel and Cosimo Pori)
LifeWorld
Thursday August 28th 2025
As a gal with a Das Ersatz poster proudly displayed in her home, I couldn’t not pick this one. Travis and Cosimo are hosting an in-process showing of their upcoming project Das Rasuchgift, and I urge all lovers of spectacular gestures and sexy irreverence to make their way to Lifeworld. I <3 these two.

Finally, Das Besties tackle drugs. Also, the celebration of the 35 year anniversary of the first Ninja Turtles movie with this poster is sending me. Lastly, I honestly wish all theater was dance theater. Go see this show!

Celestial Excursions : Brian McCorkle, Celestial Excursions, David Moodey, Gelsey Bell, Kayleigh Butcher, Mario Diaz-Moresco, Mimi Johnson, Paul Pinto, Robert Ashley, Tom Hamilton
Roulette
Sunday September 14th 2025
Very early rec because tickets will be swiped up! Robert Ashley’s opera listens for and augments the sounds, anxieties, internal music and rhythms of the elderly - a rare chance to catch a revival of the late composer’s 2003 piece and who knows when we’ll get that again! Featuring a chorus of 5 and some electronic music goodness, I recommend you rush to Roulette to nab those tickets.
Staffer: Reuven Glezer
Whenever these artists gather to do a Robert Ashley opera, you have to go. That’s all. You just have to.

Tariq’s Interlude : Antonyio Artis, Tessa Rae Bagby
HERE
August 20th-24th 2025
I’m a sucker for the recreation of any transit system via theatrical device, and Tariq’s Interlude brings the MTA to life with very little: a single performer and a single chair. I will always root for a crafty, inventive show, and this train singer’s tale is no exception.

Everything You Have Is Yours : Tatyana Tenenbaum, Hadar Ahuvia, Freedom Dabka Group, lily bo shapiro, Ze’eva Cohen, Mor Mendel, zavé mortohardjono, Gil Sperling
DCTV’s Firehouse Cinema
Friday August 22 and Monday August 25 2025
Director (and brilliant movement and sound artist) Tatyana Tenenbaum, crafts a moving and thoughtful doc intimately examining the work of choreographer Hadar Ahuvia. Ahuvia’s movement practice seeks the Palestinian roots of Israeli folk dances, and how tradition, appropriation, and conflict rest upon the body. The film threads interviews, performance footage, archival clips, and candid rehearsal room conversations into a tangle, a complex peek at how dance gets made and how dance moves through time and culture. Super potent, super thought-provoking. Come through!
